| LEXINGTON TWP. - It’s summer, so
why does your living room look the same as it did during the last blizzard?
Fold away that woolly afghan on the sofa. Take down those heavy drapes.
Bring in live plants and flowers. Declutter. It’s time to “summer-ize” your
home.
Vickie Hamilton Springer of Adorn Ltd. in Canton is starting to
specialize in rearranging clients’ homes, either seasonally, or just to
update.
“People change their clothes, their hairstyles, but not their homes,
their interiors. They get stuck in a style,” she said.
Vickie will rearrange furniture, rearrange, eliminate or replace
knickknacks, take up or put down rugs, and recommend purchases.
“I enjoy it. It’s challenging,” Vickie said. “I work with what they
already have, and whatever the budget is for new things, and take them to a
new level.”
Carolyn Anderson hired Vickie to rearrange her Lexington Township home
for winter and Christmas, then called her back this spring.
When Vickie first saw Anderson’s home, she said, “Why did you call me?
Your house is beautiful.” But Anderson said she was ready for a makeover.
“You just get to the point where you want some fresh ideas,” Anderson
said. “She relocated and rearranged things, pulled a few things from
upstairs. It’s just great. I’m still discovering things she did.”
Vickie's goal for her spring visit was to “lighten and brighten.” While
poking around in the Andersons’ linen closet, she discovered a stack of
quilts. She put one on the dining room table as a tablecloth, one on a
display table, one over the banister, and one on top of a cupboard in the
bathroom. The pale fabrics cover some of the dark wood, creating a brighter
look.
She changed vignettes on tables and displays in bookcases, and created a
new scene on the hearth. The mantel was redressed in peachy beiges and pale
or painted wood.
“The mantel is where I spend a lot of my time. It’s such a focal point,”
Vickie said. “Her mantel is nice and deep. I tried to have a variety in
scale. I love the light framed mirrors. I mixed in fruit and flowers, and
nature.”
Vickie Hamilton Springer charges $35 for the first hour and $25 for
additional hours if hired for a day (contact her at
www.adornyourhome.com).
If you want to summer-ize your home yourself, she recommends starting by
looking at your rooms with a fresh eye.
“People don’t see their homes after a while. Step back, really look at
it,” she said. “Start by removing outdated dried or silk flower
arrangements. Declutter.”
Other hints: Change your artwork. Take down the autumnal, earthy colors
and hang something in pastel. If you can’t afford original art, frame
posters. Take down drapes and hang sheers. Hang a floral print shower
curtain on a spring rod in front of your shower door.
